First Haircuts
Today Henry and Eleanor had their first haircuts. I know that in most families, this banner day takes place around 10 months, maybe 15 for those less motivated to have well-coiffed kids. Well, we were a follicularly challenged pair for the first year or two, so at the ripe old age of two-and-a-half, the baby curls finally came off. The hairdresser (Pat), did say that they would probably continue to have curls, but you know what I mean.
Here, then, is the story, in photos.
The "before" shot. Yes, gorgeous, even devastating, but ready and eager to have a haircut. I should mention that though we have been offering the haircut idea for almost a year now, they suddenly decided they wanted to do it this week. We jumped at the chance.
Off to the salon, where Eleanor volunteered to go first:
She was very serious about it, as you can see.
The big cut! Eleanor's hair grew into a natural mullet, which turned into a tail over time, and now we have that famous lock in an envelope. I know Loren will be sad to see it go.
Then Henry took his turn.
I was surprised at how serious and cooperative the kids were. This was one of those few situations where we were actually able to abide by our principles and let the kids call the shots about their bodies (unfortunately, I can't always follow that policy about diaper changes, since I feel a certain responsibility to remove poopy diapers at SOME point, and there are days when they would continue to wear them for hours in the absence of coercion). Anyway, it seems to have paid off. They were ready for this. Pat, the hairdresser, said that she has only had two other kids who were as cooperative.
Henry lost his little flip at the bottom too, though he never really developed a mullet.
Henry's hair was amazing: it grew right into a "haircut." It's only in the last few months that it has started to look shaggy at all.
I was shocked at how much hair came off of Henry's head. It looks like there's very little hair there, but it's just that it's all so light and fine and wispy. A huge amount flew off those scissors. Of course, we now also have an envelope for him.
The beautiful results:
Then the best part: candy rings!
These lasted the better part of the day.
The hairdresser's shop had this funky skeleton that sang "Super Freak" when you walked next to it. The kids had a little dance party on the way out.
At home, the candy rings were still going strong, as was the sugar rush. Not too strong to pose for an "after" photo.
And that is the end of our haircut photo essay. Hope you had fun!
